Retired, Colville Tribal Judge, Former Tribal Game Warden, Doodle Stewart, RIP, famed Washington Trapper, told my Mt. trapping partner how he use to snare bear......

He said he use to build a ramp that led to a platform. He'd place bait to where it hung at the edge of the platform.
After the bear was accustomed to hitting the bait, he would place an 1/8th inch snare in front of the bait ( not sure size of diameter)
and when the bear stuck his head through the snare, and snare tightened, the bear would panic and lunge off the front of the platform, hanging itself.
