OK guys and gals, as I promised several weeks ago, I am going to show you how I make dirthole sets in this rocky, God-forsaken ground. I hope this will be of some help to some of you, but as I said before, I am by no means a professional.

Step 1: scout out a good location. You can make the best set ever seen on the pages of a trapping magazine, but if it is in a poor lacation, you are wasting your time. In this area, an excellent location is the intersection of 2 old logging roads.[img][/img]

Step 2 : remove rocks.

Step 3 ; remove more rocks.[img][/img]

Step 4: Drive 20 miles to find enough dirt to fill hole where rocks were.

Step 5 : try to drive trap stake. Stake bend on big rock which can't be moved because trapper have no access to backhoe or bulldozer.[img][/img]

Step 6: find new location for dirthole set and remove rocks.[img][/img]

Step 7: move more rocks.[img][/img]

Step 8: Drive 25 miles to find dirt to fill in hole. Throw trap stake as far over side of mountain as is humanly possible. Hope stake hit PETA member in head. Wire trap to tree.[img][/img]

Step 9: drive 30 miles to find dirt to cover trap

Check trap for 2 months in sub-zero weather, snow , sleet, freezing rain. Catch nothing because animals are suspicious of dirt- they are used to walking on rocks.

Finally catch grinner. He is blind and missing a foot .

Fall on knees and give many thanks. Grinner will feed wife and daughter for 2 days. Hide will bring $1.50. Just 2 more grinners and trapper can buy box of Copenhagen, which will give trapper's wife 8 hours of pleasure. Just long enough to find new dirthole location.

Trapper hope that posting top-secret dirthole set will not cause flood of out-of-state grinner trappers, causing crash in grinner population and loss of copenhagen money.

I am confounded by the responses to this post.

It seems as if some of you are LAUGHING at me!!

This is an educational post, which reminds me, as a responsible writer, I feel it is my journalistic duty to cite I.M. Swamprat as the impetus for this educational treatise.

I am still viewing the Conibear in front of the dirt (rock) hole set and am amazed you were able to carry such a large chain up the mountain! How long are these extention chains? I think I have seen some that size holding logs on a loaded log truck.

I have been deemed Infinitely Wise. <sniff> Thank you, oh Thank You!

I do find it interesting that a West Virginian has used the words "treatise" and "theorum" (WV spelling :D ) in the same thread. Interesting indeed.

With all those rocks, I could have sworn those pictures were taken in Sawyer County, Wisconsin...
