Post subject:  Skunks

I am hoping to get some info from some of you pros. I have a client that has skunks that keep going under his porch and sleep there durring the day. I have trapped several but others keep showing up. I know I need to do some exlusion work. The weather has finaly gotten decent but the ground is still frozen. I am thinking of using either some wire fencing ,that I have, or lattice. I was going to install the fencing under the porch so it would be out of sight. So I guess I am asking if there is a preffence between lattice or wire fence. How far down do you have to burry it? For the fence I was thinking about a foot down and then bring it back ( horizontaly). Also, do skunks follow the scent / trails of other skunks and hole up in common places? Thanks, NH

Well, only thing I can say on all that, is the NTA's handbook says they do use comunal (sp?) dens, and not the same one each night. Kinda like hotels. One reason they spread rabbees so bad.

I know I can't spell. :(

I don't know how deep you need to dig it for sure, stinkers are diggers! I would be willing to bet that they would destroy lattice, that stuff is for looks and not durability. Good luck.

Took the 5th skunk away this morning. They are definitely using his porch as a flop house. I will be installing some wire fence so they can't get in there again ( I hope). Thanks guys, NH

I pulled up some boards and only found a small depression with some misc. nesting material, along with a lot of scat. I need to start taking pics of these things. One was almost all white with just some black around his eyes. Skunk #4 was the largest I have ever seen in my life. His body, nose to ***, was about two feet. Looked like a badger or something. I took some video but it did not come out very well. From now on I will use the better camera. I am sure I will have some pics before too long. NH

Hey, check out Animal Behavior and Diseases in the Archives section of this forum. I think that is where I read some good stuff about airborne rabies at skunk dens. It might change the way you approach your work with skunks.

Good info. I did not know that rabies could be contracted through the air. That was an informative read. Hey Boom, is she going to make a black and white purse now?

You are a brave man Boom. Last time I skinned a skunk it about made me sick. It would be nice to have a couple of hides though. I just got to work up my nerve and make sure the wife is away for the day.

use the peroxide mixture to de stink it, and be carefull about pulling on the tail.I only did 1 so far, but it went fine. This one may just be yote bait since she don't want it, and I gotta head to the base in a bit.
