Hello all, new guy here.

I am not a trapper. I did grow up using live traps just for fun so am not a complete newbie.

My problem is this year here in E. VA. I have had more problems with skunks than I have had in the last 22 yrs. My dog has been spray 2X this year in my yard. I use to not kill the few that I have seen over the years but now it is war. If my dog was sprayed while in the woods that would be one thing but the little striped SOBs are right by my deck or in the yard and aren't to concerned about going anywhere ( I do go out and make some noise and look around before letting her out). This last time she was sprayed was right before work and I had to call in.

I hav 3 live traps set but keep catching possums. Since possums will eat just about anything I imagine I will just have to acept it but is there any bait that would up my odds on getting the skunks?

I have killed 3 so far this year, two were caught in live traps with bacon fat on bread and IIRC peanut butter. These are the same baits I am currently using.

If it weren't for the possums I would rather use conibear traps with a long rope tied to them so I could just drag the darn stinker's body back in the field for the buzzards to claen up.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately possums are basically scavengers. They will eat anything. If you catch a possum, relocate it a few miles away and eventually you will catch them all out and then maybe you can catch the skunks. I usually just use cat foot, the dry kind and catch my share of stinkers with it. There may be a better bait for skunks, but I do not know what it is. Good Luck. :P

Thanks!!

I used some canned catfood this past weekend but didn't think about the dry which will be much less expensive and less messy.

Thanks again and I will keep you updated.

welcome to the site William. I catch a lot of skunks in cage traps using straight bacon grease, sardines, fish, or a combination. Unfortunately, just about any bait will catch a possum.

i use a couple 4 or 5 whole eggs in the traps unshelled and raw and a little bit of skunk essence in the trap witch you can get at just about any sporting goods store in the hunting and fishing section and it seems to work quite well for me good luck

Got the skunk!!!

Hopefully that will be it for a while. Thats 4 skunks in my yard in less than a year. I have lived here all my life and never seen so many skunks.

BTW, the night before I had caught a possum which ate my bait of choice, bacon grease on bread, so with not much time after work ( it was going to be an unseasonably warm night so I knew the skunk would be out and about ) I used some of those soft dog treats that are shaped like bacon.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Welcome to the WAT Forum BanditBuster. You need to come out on the Camp Fire and/or Trap Line threads and get to know everyone. Bananas are pretty good attractors for coons too....good around pets....they don't pay bananas much attention.
