Post subject:  What Call

I'm going to start getting into predator hunting. What calls should I look into getting. I'm probably going to start out with a Cottontail in distress. I want a new gun and this hobby will give me a reason. The guns not an issue though. I'll be getting a .223 probably, although Gander had a nice Ruger in .243 on sale with one of the benchrest stocks and bull barrels for 599 when it's usually 899.

I've had good success with the raspy coaxer and hot dog howler from Primos.

i would go with the .243. its a good all around gun. i hunt both deer and yotes with it. its small enough not to cause too much damage but powerful enough to reach out and pet those long range yotes. :D my grandpa shot a buck at 500 yards with the 243 i use. its a hell of a gun!

I have to agree with the 243 as being my first choice because of it's versatility. Coyote calls I like are small so that I can have`one with me at all times. Rabbit distress and fawn distress both work well. I will not buy an ecaller because it just does not seam right to me. I love to go to a city and blow one of my coyote calls at night to get all the dogs in the neighbor hood to start barking.

Start with a mouth call....rabbit in destress works wonders on all preditors...then move to an electric call.....as for guns...223 is my choice ammo is cheap and in a pinch you can put a buck on the ground, even thou there are better guns to use.

I would recommend buying a predator pack from Primos Hunting Calls. The Randy Anderson Signature Series is a very good line of predator calls from Primos. I would get the pack with the Hot Dog and the Ki-Yi. The pack also comes with a video that will help you learn how the calls should sound and how to set up.

benelli7979 I would have to agree with you. It's amazing just what sounds bring animals over for a look see. Another little trick I like to use is when sitting by a fence to call I will simultainiously blow on my call and pull the wire on the fence to make it sueal and stretch as if the critter is hung up. Seems to work for me.

I bought the wife a 223 yesterday in Fallon, but that isnt the issue...they guy I bought the gun from swears by the new fox pro digital callers....told me he called in 63 yotes last season.....do the math even at 10 bucks a yote that is 630 bucks and that call is paid for......wife gave me the go ahead to get one.....so next week I will be ordering one.....will let you know how good it works.

also, LONE, if you call in some foxes and cats along with the yotes you will make some profit your first year.

we called in 2 cats 4 greys and 4 kits last season.....with our cats bringing in on an avg of 500 bucks greys 30 and kits 7-10....you see where this is headin?
but one thing to remember is electic calls can break down always carry and extra call.
