Short sit Friday with complications.
Baited today and rolled barrel around tree more.
A couple are camera (flash) shy. They pull the barrel so they can put there back to the camera...and the blind. That platform was for me !

Here is the gang.

Only phase bear

Small sow with 2

Big sow with 2

If she comes in 10 minutes ahead of the twins, there could be trouble. I would just be sick.

I would need 2 more weeks to really work theses bears.
Another sit coming up. :D

Pipe has 1 on ice

Well I finally have my backside in a chair.

On Friday, the details were wrong. The site was left 2 1/2 hours before sunset.
Saturday, rebait, then I went further up the drainage 300 yards, broke off an evergreen branch sprayed it with Sow in Heat, from Big Bear Scents, and dragged it the 700 yards back to the truck.
Monday, when starting up my trail, I noticed fresh evergreen boughs laying in the trail. These boughs ,which were not cut, were found in the trail all the way to the site. They had been pulled out of the trees.
I purposely waited until the thermals had reversed.
At 1 hour before sunset, my little Canon 100 video was started.
At 20 minutes, the camera said ..card full.
So I reached up to start to format the card.
There was a scratching sound Right Behind me. Turning slowly, I see a large cub 6 feet off the ground in a tree 8 feet behind the ground blind. There is the sibling and the Big sow, you saw.
The cub is squalling. He had to be sweet talked to settle down and leave. The family meanders up and away. 10 or 15 minutes later, I hear noise, bear talk. The camera was restarted.
In comes the other sow with her 2 cubs from right to left, right along the log. When they departed, the cam was turned off. 15 minutes later , another noise was heard. On goes the little camera.
This time , an average sized male parades himself from right to left on my approach log. As the bear rears up and reaches into "Pipepushers Bird Guard", a camera goes off and, the big revolver is cocked.
The shot was good! 30 yards and a good long moan.

1st nights sit.
7 bears in 45 minutes.
ground blind
10 - 12 yards
44 mag.
All on tape

The cam flash went off and a bear busted out of there as I arrived back at site to pack.
The bear cams still need to be picked up.
We got a heat wave today. :x So, the meat is all processed.

Thanks for being so encouraging. You are all my hunt buddies.
Pics and Vids coming.

( this is probably the 1st year Pipe is not last) :D

Hooray for Pipepusher!!!!!! I for one can hardly wait to see the video. I think that when I started down the trail and saw those limbs torn off the trees I'd have gone back to my vehicle and called it a day! :--o

I still have not been back up to retrieve 2 bear cams.

but, here is a short spliced vid of the action

- Notice the sow does not feed the cubs
- Notice the different walk out after realizing they may be intruding, on me or something behind me, just like moma.

( turn sound way up)

Most interesting! I did note the way the sow and cubs casually walked in but walked out like kids that had been caught doing something wrong.....sort of making themselves invisible. Was that a chipmunk running around in front of the stand just before you shot the bear? Did you make any videos of bringing the bear out?

No Swamp, I got busy on the after dark retrieval and only took a few pics.
My daughter and her boyfriend came with me. It was their 1st encounter with any animal harvest. They were so exited.
We talked on the trail as I pulled my hand cart. When arriving, just 15 yards down hill from the bait, the boyfriend, excuse me, Jason,
says he saw a flash. When he asked me if any one else was up there, I told him no.. that was a bear. :D Then it tore thru the brush ,parallel to us.
I took it in stride, so they followed. They got to find 1st spoor, and follow it to it's destination. Help manhandle the beast down thru "that" timber to the trail.
Closely observed the dissection and walked out with a good adrenalin grin. They loved it.

The site is all cleaned up.
This was the 1st tree on my trail in

Single branches were in the trail, all the way to the site.

There is quit a bit of scat there now. They all are still real green.

You may remember, when the site was first erected, 2 white marks were made on the approach log, just in front of the barrel. The inside of these marks is 6 feet.

That is my bear, just seconds before the shot.

There always seems to be some hitch when picking up. :o
Last year I picked up a railroad spike in my tire.

This year, I locked myself out of the truck. O.K., there is a magnetic box with a spare key on a 2" square channel under my truck. I looked ...it was not there! Almost time to break a window, when I thought I would look again.

Don't ask me how. ???

Awesome Pipepusher, all of this is most interesting to me. I hope you saved the spike that you had in your tire, you may want to make a knife out of it some day. I usually have several extra keys...getting locked out isn't high on my list of things I enjoy! Keep the info and pictures coming!

OK Pipepusher, where are you and how are the bear hunts going? You didn't get eat up out in those bear woods did you? Do you process the bear hides for anything useful?

Hi Swamp,
Thanks for checking on me. I am done for the spring. The second bear tag , I found out, is for Fall only. :x
The bait was in hand and I was all set. If I had known that , the trigger might not have been so light.
Not sure what to do with the hides. No one wants them. I remember when a bear carcass did not have to be salvaged. Crazy. We got 65lbs. of breakfast sausage from him. (The wife is still leery with bear), I figured this would be a good way to finally break her in.

I cannot imagine throwing a bear skin away! I would flesh it and dry it or preserve it with fleshing and putting it through a tanning solution....but not toss it! If your bear sausage turns out as good as that that I had made from my WV bear, you will have some awesome eats. The roast were all cooked in my Dutch Ovens and none was wasted. Thanks for the updates.
