what are you trapping first then you will get some good answers. be more specific. they all do the same thing it is just what you are going to need for specific critters.

for the most part the stake out in deep water or a weight . no real slack in the chain and any wire used to the set . when the critter goes out the trap will bring them down . you can use a slide loc and wire to a stake or a weight too . setup takes longer . I have used them but the weight of the trap brings them to the bottom if water is deep enough and the closest they can get to land is the farthest point of the chain. I have tons of washers that I had bent over and drilled two holes in for locs the work but I rarely use them only if there is shallow water for long distance this gives them room to eventually get to deeper water . a stake with a wire attached to another stake near trap set hook the loc to the chain of the trap and run the loc through the wire it should slide one way twards the water.you can use weights instead of stake's too.
