Can someday please explain a chin or belly stick for a foothold on a beaver. Like where exactly in relation to the trap and shoreline you put it. We caught our first beaver last week on a foothold but now the creek is up and our traps are under three feet of water so I have been watching videos this week. And what I have learned we were more lucky than good last week. Thanks

I'm by no means a beaver trapper, but basically when a beaver feels the sticks touch it's chest they'll stop swimming and put their feet down too begin walking up the bank. I would say that the length of the stick and placement in relation to the trap highly depend on the specifics of the trap site (water level, grade of the bank, etc.)

Basically you want the beaver to hit the stick just before the trap so it drops its foot down into it. I would say just at the closes jaw or an inch before.

The chin/belly stick seems to have gone out of use lately. I know some who swear by it and some who swear at it as a needless complication. If my footholds in "deeper" then usual water in a beaver set I'll use them, same if its in a very shallow set say 1"-3" of water(above the trap) and if its deeper then about 6". Some swear by a sharpened stick(s). Others swear by just a simple bent stick in front of the trap. Like a lot of trapping its all personal preference. No hard n fast rules. Id suggest trying sets with, without, and variations of the stick to see what works for you. Good luck
