Dilema: Going to be making pocket sets for coon and mink in a very good trout stream. Ran into this problem last year: How do you keep otter out of your traps? Last year on nearly every pocket set I made, the traps were sprung and there was otter sign more prevalent than the water they sat in. Used a sweet smelling coon lure for coon. Mink sets were 'rat carcasses or the back end of other taken mink. Any suggestions? This stream is, as has been, crawling with coon and mink. No otter tag this year. Using 1 1/2 coilspring and 220 conni. I do set trails. No problem there. Just know from sign I'm missing more of both by not setting the waterline. Stumped on this one.

Oh shoot. That's easy. Screw the muskrat and mink, trap for otter. ;)

Not that easy Lil Bit. Need a otter tag here and only get 1 every 2/3 yrs or so. We got just as many otter in spots and Charles does possum. So there lies my dilema. How to catch coon and mink in a pocket without be bothered by otter. :(

hmm... Make your pocket deepr and set your trap further back. You can also cut your pocket in at a higher angle, as I bet you're cutting it straight back or at aslight angle. Don't let the otter see what he's after. Mink and coon will go on curiosity just as easy. They don't need to see the bait to investigate it. The only thing is, you'll lose more coon this way, and get more mink.

For coons, set some dogproof traps and call it a day.

So that's my advice. Smaller hole, deeper trap, greater angle on the pocket.

Have fun!
