Ok, have heard of some on other sites painting their land traps. I don't think I'll be doing it, but have any of you done this and if so, how'd it go as for catches made painted vs. dipped, dyed and waxed?

I paint my conibears and snares with no ill effects. I stick to dye and wax for footholds though.

ADC-- I am assuming you do the painting early enough to let the smell dissipate for a while? Do you do anything else to help get rid of the smell?

I do paint all my connibears. Rustoleum Flat Black. This is done back in june/july. I don't think that any paint smell will bother any critters underwater as I've been doing this for quite some time and have not had any avoidance problem even with coon,mink or otter. At times I've been forced to put spankin new connis out when I've used up all others. These are painted the day or night before and have produced the 1st night. But as far as land traps.... I would rather not push it.

Yeah, I should have clarified, I was wondering about dry land sets, not water sets.

I've spray painted a cage trap for a woodland cubby set once. I left it too dry really well. Worked just fine.

Spray paint = lazy trapper's dip...faster and less expensive. Wouldn't make a habit out of it, but for just a few traps why not?

i could see painting coni's for land use thats seems to work out,i dont think i would ever paint a foot hold that i planned on useing it for canine or bobcat trapping,just dont seem like a good thing to do i would think you would get alot of dug traps or something of that nature

I dye and wax. I have some formula one that I may do a few traps in this year, but my canine traps will be dyed and waxed.

For the more trap shy critters (coyotes, foxes, bobcats) and the like, dye and wax is probably hard to beat.

I leave them outside for at least a couple weeks. I catch most of my fox every year in them snares.
