Post subject:  newspaper story about "chislic" (cubed deep fat fried meat)

I've mentioned it several times on WAT about eastern SD's "chislic" tradition. The first time I mentioned it I didn't know how geographically limited the culture was in the country (although I would think that skewed chunks of meat deep fat fried would be common by another name somewhere else). Anyway, the big local paper today had a large story on chislic culture is you're interested. I never have bought sheep and made it into chislic although I've eaten mutton versions in various establishments. I used to do a lot of deer and antelope chislic.

One of the most interesting chislic memories of mine was when I was a senior in high school. My frined and I had just shot our first WT bucks (lot less deer around here then and a lot harder to get an any deer tag--basically a buck tag). My friend's dad owned a fast food place and we were using the deep fat fryers to cook up some vension chislic. A buddy of ours was there and while munching away, said "ow" and pulls out a solid .22 slug from a piece he was eating (these meat pieces are usually cut up into squres about an 1-1.5 inches in size). Somehow that slug had fallen exactly in the center of a piece while we were cutting it up. That buck appeared to have carried that round for a while as there was no sign of a wound when we cut it up. Probably got shot by a Hutterite trying to score some meat on the off season (know what I mean trappintime??)

Interesting read. I'm sure I'd love it as I do like Lamb.
Sounds familiar on the Hut's too. Had to laugh about this mention as the other day I was coming down a muddy back road that had tire ruts 8 inch's deep from a 18 wheeler. Came over the hill and here was a Hutterite shooting gophers with his new Soviet bloc rifle. Still had the bayonet on it and I think maybe that will be what kills anything he's going to eat  .
