Colony traps I've seen ussually have 2 doors, 1 on each end, and are closed, and the animal pushes threw the door, then it closes behind them. But, I have seen some folks post other designs before. Cage traps can have 1 or 2 doors, held open with a trigger, and when the animal enters and trips the trigger, they set it off, and the doors close. Swamp and afew others make cage traps, so they can help ya with that or you can search the old post and read where they already posted it. Good luck.

Colony traps work for muskrats, possums, any critter that dens in a family group pretty much year round, skunks too. Cage traps are a one animal set up as opposed to colony traps where the capacity is dictated by the size. A colony trap in a good spot can take muskrats etc alot quicker then cage style. 2 or 3 'rats to a colony trap is not uncommon and a buddy had to cut the wires on a door of his to empty it. It was about 28" long and 10" square(I built it). He was in a state with a 48 hour check so it had two days/night to catch. It had 9 'rats, kits to adults. Cleaned out a big den but in some areas you have to take all sizes. In our home state colony/repeating traps are illegal so check your laws, some states have rules governing size, materials etc.
