anybody have any suggestions for softening the pelt of river otter. its my first one. how is the best way to ship it for tanning.

All I can tell you about softening an otter hide is after you have had it in a tanning solution. Then you stretch it in all directions by hand as it cures and dries. As far as shipping one off to be tanned I have used a local taxidermist. Be sure and remove all the red meat.

Flesh it well and then strech it out and you can mail it. I use Moyle Mink in Idaho for all of my tanning and the treat me well. I have used others in Alaska and all have done a good job.
