Virginia Hunting Dog Retrieval Bills Advancing- (02/12)

Two bills that will simplify the retrieval of strayed hunting dogs are moving through the Virginia legislature.

Senate Bill 1180, introduced by Sen. Kenneth Stolle, R-Virginia Beach, will prohibit the removal of a dog’s tracking collar without consent of the dog owner. It received Senate approval on Jan. 23, 40 to 0. It awaits a hearing in the House Courts of Justice Committee.

Also progressing in the legislature is HB 2531, introduced by Delegate Steve Landes, R-Waynesboro. It will allow the retrieval of strayed hunting dogs from another’s property, so long as the hunter identifies himself if asked to by the landowner. The bill passed the Senate Courts of Justice Committee on Feb. 12, 13 to 1.

On Feb. 6, an amended version of HB 2531 passed the House of Delegates, 96 to 3. The amendment came after sportsmen objected to the original language, which would have abolished hunters’ right to go onto private property to retrieve a strayed hunting dog without permission.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance alerted Virginia sportsmen to the initial danger of HB 2531 via a Sportsmen Alert in January. Many hunters used the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org to send messages to lawmakers opposing the restriction.
