Home > Tips, pointers and sets > You are here: Drown beavers in shallow water with #3 or larger coil spring traps Drown
beavers in shallow water with #3 or larger coil spring traps Carry a
few coil spring traps with about eight feet of chain on them for beaver
sets when the water is too shallow for drowning locks in water one to
two feet deep. Wire some
window weights to your trap chain just below the swivel by the trap’s
frame. I like to use two of
them. They add a lot of
weight to the trap and pull the beaver down so fast that it cannot even
make it out to the drowning stake.
I have drowned beaver in twelve inches of water using this
method. If you cannot find any window weights try some steel bar stock approximately two inches square by one foot long. Drill a hole in it so it can be wired to your trap chain. It is a lot of extra weight to carry around but when you find the killer spot to make a set and a 330 conibear body grip trap will not work because the beaver are trap shy, you always have this method. Window weights also work great in deep water sets. Editor's note: Thanks for the tip Rich!
