The SLDF filed a motion with the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division, to intervene in a lawsuit to maintain the state's first black bear hunting season. The New Jersey Fish and Game Council approved the bear season in July after an exhaustive study on the necessity for a hunt. Anti-hunting groups filed their notice of appeal on September 22 to stop the hunt. The New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs and sportsman Frank Dara of Clifton, New Jersey join the SLDF in the case. "The law is very clear: The New Jersey Fish and Game Council is authorized to establish appropriate hunting seasons according to the state Fish and Game Code," said Bill Horn, SLDF legal counsel. "It considered thousands of public comments generated by New Jersey citizens at public hearings. The Council's decision to approve a bear season was perfectly appropriate under state law." The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation protects and defends America's wildlife conservation programs and the pursuits - hunting, fishing and trapping - that generate the money to pay for them. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation is responsible for public education, legal defense and research. Its mission is accomplished through several distinct programs coordinated to provide the most complete defense capability possible.
