Anti's file lawsuit to stop New Jersey bear hunt (9/26/2003)

Anti-hunting groups have filed a lawsuit to halt the New Jersey bear hunt. The suit comes following a decision by the New Jersey Fish and Game Council to hold a bear hunt in December.

The Bear Education and Resource Group, New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance and other animal rights supporters filed a lawsuit in the state appellate court on September 22 against Governor James McGreevey's administration and the Fish and Game Council. It seeks to reverse the state's authorization of the bear hunt.

The anti's argue that wildlife officials' claims that the hunt is necessary to control an increasing bear population cannot be justified on scientific grounds.

New Jersey wildlife officials defend the hunt saying it is justified by reliable bear population estimates done by an independent panel. The bear hunt is scheduled for December 8-13.
