Sportsmen stop bill to impose unjust ammo tax in California (6/6/2003)

A massive outcry from sportsmen and target shooters has stopped a California bill that would have skyrocketed the cost of ammunition sold in the state.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and other sportsmen's organizations rallied hunters and target shooters against Assembly Bill 992, a bill that would unjustifiably impose a ten-cent tax on each round of ammunition sold in California. As a result, the bill did not have enough votes to pass and was held up on the Assembly floor.

Sportsmen must remain vigilant, as the Assembly could take up the bill at any time during the legislative session. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance urges hunters and shooters to continue to contact their Assembly members in opposition to the bill.

The proposed tax would increase annually, based upon inflation, with a minimum rise of one cent per year. Money generated from the tax would go toward the medical bills of gunshot victims.

Law-abiding sportsmen purchase the majority of ammunition in the state, yet the bill, introduced by Assemblyman Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles), would make them scapegoats for the actions of criminals. The tax would cost the average sportsman hundreds, if not thousands of dollars more per year, and would increase every year.

Take Action! Assembly Bill 992 could still see action in the Assembly. California sportsmen and shooters should continue to tell their Assembly members that responsible gun owners should not have to pay additional taxes to compensate for the actions of criminals. Tell them to oppose AB 992. Contact your Assembly member at (916) 319-2856.
