ELF takes credit for Michigan arsons (5/29/2003)

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF), labeled by the FBI as one of the nation's most active domestic terror organizations, has claimed responsibility for fires that recently destroyed two houses near Detroit.

On May 27, the Associated Press reported that the ELF website claimed responsibility for the March fires, which the group says caused $400,000 in damage. "ELF, no sprawl" was spray painted on the garage door of the house next to one of the wrecked homes.

According to the ELF website, the arsons were apparent anti-sprawl actions. The homes that were destroyed were in the late stages of construction, and one was only two weeks from completion.

The ELF intimidates people involved in legitimate businesses by using economic sabotage to protest environmental issues. The burning of the two homes is the latest in a long line of ELF terrorism. According to the Animal Liberation Front's Underground Direct Action Report, the ELF claimed credit for 53 acts of terror in 2002, which totaled millions of dollars.

To counter animal and environmental terrorism, the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance has prepared The Animal and Ecological Terrorism Act. It is promoting the bill to legislators in all 50 states. The model bill recognizes animal and eco-terrorism as forms of domestic terrorism; increases penalties for persons participating in politically motivated acts of animal or eco-terrorism and creates specific penalties for those who encourage, assist or finance these acts of terrorism.
