Sportsmen must continue to educate businesses that back the anti's (5/2/2003)

Two pet supply companies have failed to terminate their partnerships with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) despite significant pressure from sportsmen. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance urges hunters to continue efforts to inform the businesses of HSUS's anti-hunting agenda and demand that the relationships cease.

PETsMART

The charitable arm of PETsMART made a $15,000 contribution to HSUS for spay and neuter programs. The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance does not take issue with the spaying and neutering of pets. However, every dollar that HSUS receives from corporate America to fund such programs represents money that is made available for its national campaigns to end hunting, trapping and fishing.

To emphasize that point, according to a recent article in Worth Magazine, HSUS brought in $65 million in revenue in 2000, but gave out only $1.6 million in cash grants to animal protection groups. In fact, Worth reports that the American Institute of Philanthropy "gives the group a D for spending as much as 53 percent of its expenses on fundraising."

Sportsmen and sportswomen should express their dissatisfaction with PETsMART's support of HSUS by contacting Philip Francis, President & CEO, PETsMART, Inc., 19601 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85027; Phone: 800-738-1385.

PETCO

The charitable arm of PETCO is sponsoring the HSUS's National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE) Adopt a Teacher program in 500 elementary schools across the country. The program is part of the group's plan to introduce children, kindergarten through grade six, to the animal rights movement.

The Adopt a Teacher program places the HSUS publication Kids In Nature's Defense (KIND) News into the hands of teachers and students on a monthly basis during the school year. It provides classrooms with materials that promote the HSUS and its agenda.

Take Action! Sportsmen should contact PETCO and let the company know that its support of an anti-hunting group is unacceptable. Contact Brian Devine, President & CEO, PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., 9125 Rehco Rd., San Diego, CA 92121. Phone: (858) 453-7845 ext. 3046 Fax: (858) 453-6585.
