The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance contacted Levi Strauss & Co. to investigate allegations of a nearly one million-dollar donation that it reportedly made to PETA. Levi Strauss representative Shawn Rossiter asked that the Alliance clarify the facts about the donation. "In January 2000, one of our managers was killed in the Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crash," said Rossiter. "In his memory, his family requested that donations be given to his favorite charity, PETA. Employee contributions, plus our corporate foundation match, totaled $11,000." Rossiter explained that in such a situation, Levi Strauss & Co. makes a matching donation to the charitable organization designated by the family. When asked whether the company intends to donate to PETA in the future, Rossiter told the Alliance that, besides the aforementioned circumstance, Levi Strauss donates corporate money only to causes named on its website. They are preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, increasing economic development opportunities, and ensuring access to an education. CopyrightÓ U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance- www.ussportsmen.org
