California legislator amends anti-hunting bill to throw off sportsmen's opposition (3/28/2003)

A California legislator has amended an anti-hound hunting bill in an effort to divide sportsmen on the issue.

Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-Los Angeles) has amended Assembly Bill 342, a bill he introduced to ban the hunting of all mammals with dogs. The new language will prohibit only the pursuit and taking of black bear and bobcat with hounds. While the amendment narrows the scope of the legislation, it is merely an effort to placate some sportsmen's strong opposition to the bill.

If sportsmen become divided on the issue and sacrifice even the smallest part of their hunting heritage, Assemblyman Koretz and other anti-hunting legislators will have toppled the first domino in the campaign to ban all hunting.

The anti's eliminate America's outdoor heritage one step at a time. Banning the hunting of black bears and bobcats with hounds would be a step in the wrong direction. The very hunting activities that are preserved by the amendment, including for raccoons, rabbits and foxes, could be next on the chopping block.

Take Action! California sportsmen must remain united and not be mollified by the amendment to AB 342. Don't assume one form of hunting is safe because it has been protected this time. Sportsmen should contact their assemblymen today and let them know that Assembly Bill 342 is another attempt by the anti-hunting lobby to restrict California's hunting heritage.
