Oklahoma voters can restrict animal rights ballot issues (10/4/2002)

An Oklahoma ballot issue would make it more difficult for animal rights supporters to ban hunting, fishing and trapping through the initiative process. Sportsmen in the state are encouraged to vote “YES” on State Question 698.

Question 698 would increase the required number of signatures needed on petitions for any ballot issue seeking to abolish any occupation, entertainment or sporting event involving animals.  Current law requires that petitioners gather signatures representing eight percent of the previous gubernatorial election.  If Question 698 passes, that requirement will be increased to 15 percent.

Oklahoma sportsmen and the Oklahoma Wildlife Commission support Question 698. It also has the backing of the state’s rodeo community and agriculture groups.  Oklahoma sportsmen should vote “YES” on Question 698.
