Anti-hunting Senator defeated in primary election (9/11/2002)

New Hampshire-

New Hampshire voters rejected Republican Senator Bob Smith’s bid for a third term in office.  Sportsmen played a key role in the decision to oust the nation’s most anti-hunting legislator.

On Tuesday, two-term New Hampshire Senator Bob Smith, a self-proclaimed animal protection advocate, was defeated in the state’s Republican primary election by Congressman John E. Sununu.  Sununu is a supporter of both sportsmen’s rights and the second amendment.

Senator Smith advocated the election of animal rights fanatics into Congress and the ousting of legislators who support sportsmen’s views and the protection of America’s outdoor heritage.  He previously stated, “the (animal rights) movement…needs to invest a greater proportion of resources in electoral activities, assisting its friends and penalizing its enemies.”

Furthermore, according to Federal Election Commission records, Smith accepted campaign cash from Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Newkirk once commented that, "Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughter houses."

“New Hampshire sportsmen should be congratulated for making a showing at the polls and removing this anti-hunting legislator from power,” said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance manager of government affairs.  “Senator Smith had received 100 percent approval ratings from the nation’s largest animal rights organization, the Humane Society of the United States, and helped found a political action committee that helps anti-hunting legislators get elected.”

In November, Sununu will face Democratic candidate Jeanne Shaheen in the race for U.S. Senate.
