PeTA faces off against environmental groups (8/27/2002)

One of the most notorious animal rights organizations is criticizing three prominent environmental groups for their support of medical research on animals.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has condemned the World Wildlife Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Environmental Defense for their support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s use of lab animals to test toxic compounds.

The animal rights group claims these organizations have “caused major setbacks in the development and acceptance of non-animal test methods.”  All three received failing marks in recent PETA propaganda.  PETA has initiated a letter-writing campaign against the organizations and has taken out ads urging people to end financial donations to the groups.

“We’re convinced PETA is on the wrong side,” said Gina Solomon, a senior scientist and physician with the Natural Resources Defense Council.  “We’re greatly concerned that PETA is working directly against environmental and human health goals in their campaign.”

She continues, “If PETA gets its way, people and wild animals will be the guinea pigs.  We would prefer that a small number of lab rats are used to save the rest of us.”
