Anheuser-Busch to reconsider support of anti-fishing organization (8/23/2002)

One of the world’s largest breweries, Anheuser-Busch, has a long tradition of support for recreational fishing and other outdoor sports.  It is this tradition that has it reviewing its relationship with an environmental group that opposes federal pro-fishing legislation.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance recently alerted Anheuser-Busch about the Ocean Conservancy, an organization that claims to be committed to the health of the marine environment, but opposes H.R. 3547, the Freedom to Fish Act.  Anheuser-Busch is one of Ocean Conservancy’s supporters.

Subsequently, a spokesperson with Anheuser-Busch has told the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, “Anheuser-Busch and Busch Entertainment Corporation have not, do not and never would support any activities to limit the rights of recreational fishermen."

She continued, “At no time did Ocean Conservancy contact us regarding this legislation, and we do not support the Ocean Conservancy’s position on the bill….  We are currently reviewing the appropriateness of our relationship with and support of specific Ocean Conservancy projects.”

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance commends Anheuser-Busch for its consideration of sportsmen’s opinions.

“Anheuser-Busch has a long and proud tradition of promoting sportsmen’s activities,” said U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance President Bud Pidgeon.  “We are sure that after reviewing the anti-fishing actions of the Ocean Conservancy, the company will do the right thing and end its support of the organization.”
