Appeal filed to save Wisconsin dove hunt (7/18/2002)

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund (SLDF) has appealed a judge’s decision that halted Wisconsin’s inaugural dove hunt.

At the beginning of July, the SLDF filed its appeal of Dane County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Moeser’s recent ruling that Wisconsin’s state wildlife agency did not have the authority to establish the mourning dove hunt approved in 2000. Moeser’s initial decision found that the DNR did have the authority to establish the hunting season, but a few months later, he reversed his ruling.

"The battle to gain dove hunting in Wisconsin is part of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance’s crusade to expand hunting opportunities across the nation. We are turning the tables on the anti’s," said Tony Celebrezze. "Instead of sportsmen having to defend themselves, we are offensively advancing our movement and making the anti’s put up their money if they want to stop us."

The Alliance has recently been involved in efforts to expand hunting in states including Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio.
