 Home > News and alerts > You are here: U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance weighs in on proposed opening of new wildlife refuges U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance weighs in on proposed opening of new wildlife refuges (7/15/2002) The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance supports the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) proposed rule, which would open seven additional wildlife refuges to hunting or fishing, and increase available activities at eight other refuges. The USFWS will consider opening the following National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) to migratory gamebird hunting, upland game hunting, big game hunting and angling: •
Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge (LA) – May open to migratory
gamebird hunting, upland game hunting, big game hunting and angling. •
Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge (LA) – May open to migratory
gamebird hunting, upland game hunting and big game hunting. •
Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge (LA) - May open to migratory
gamebird hunting, upland game hunting, big game hunting and angling. •
Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge (KS) – May open to
migratory gamebird hunting. •
Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge (TX) – May open to migratory
gamebird hunting. •
Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge (WI) – May open to migratory
gamebird hunting. •
Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge (MT) – May open to upland game
hunting and big game hunting. •
Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (GA) – May open to upland game
hunting. •
Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge (VA) – May open to big game
hunting. •
Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge (VA) – May open to
big game hunting. •
Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge (VA) – May open to big game
hunting. •
Washita National Wildlife Refuge (OK) – May open to big game hunting. •
Rydell National Wildlife Refuge (MN) – May open to angling. "The
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance strongly supports opening these lands for
sportsmen’s activities," said Bud Pidgeon, U.S. Sportsmen’s
Alliance president. "It would be consistent with the National
Refuge System Improvement Act, which Congress passed in 1997 to ensure
that the Refuge System is managed for wildlife conservation and that
