Motel chain is missing the message (6/14/2002)

Despite a flood of comments from sportsmen to Accor Economy Lodging regarding its relationship with the nation’s largest animal rights organization, the company has refused to end its partnership with the group.

Accor Economy Lodging, the parent company of Motel 6, Red Roof Inns and Studio 6, continues to support two programs of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) - "Pets for Life" and "Disaster Recovery."

In an attempt to pacify outraged outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen, Accor has been replying to sportsmen’s comments noting that it "welcomes sportsmen of all types." It tries to subdue them by saying that Accor Economy Lodging has sponsored sportsmen's television programs and advertised in Field & Stream.

However, the issue has nothing to do with whom Accor welcomes in its hotels or where it advertises. The problem is that it has partnered with and contributed to a powerful animal rights organization that has the goal of ending all animal use, including hunting, fishing and trapping.

While sportsmen try to make this clear to Accor, it claims that its goal in working with HSUS was to promote its pet-friendly policy and assist pet owners in crisis.

However, Accor’s sponsorship of HSUS does just the opposite. In fact, the animal rights organization would be happy to see the end of pet ownership. Wayne Pacelle, HSUS senior vice president and former national director for the Fund for Animals, was quoted in Animal People magazine saying, "We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals."

In addition, despite its "Humane Society" name, HSUS does not operate or oversee any locally run animal shelters or humane societies. According to tax forms, only a small percentage of its enormous $65 million income (during fiscal year 2000) went toward programs directly helping companion animals.

Although sportsmen have contacted Accor to educate the company about the HSUS’s real intentions, it has not yet seen the light.
