Thirty-five West Virginia counties lose Sunday hunting (5/15/2002)

In a setback for hunting opportunities, over half of the counties in West Virginia have voted to outlaw Sunday hunting. The West Virginia legislature approved statewide Sunday hunting in 2001, but noted that it could be prohibited through a countywide vote.

During the May primary election, 35 counties rejected Sunday hunting and reduced the hunting opportunities of working sportsmen and sportswomen who find it difficult to get into the field on other days.

The main opposition to Sunday hunting has come from the West Virginia Farm Bureau.

In the counties that rejected Sunday hunting, the issue cannot appear on the ballot again for two years. Counties that approve the activity cannot see it on the ballot again for five years.
