California sportsmen may face unjust tax on ammo (5/15/2002)

Law-abiding sportsmen may soon be taxed to pay for the medical expenses of victims of illegal firearm activity.

California's Senate Constitutional Amendment 12 would impose an additional sales tax of five cents on every piece of ammunition sold in the state after January 1, 2003. The tax would finance a trauma center fund to compensate the unpaid medical bills accrued by victims of illegal firearm activity.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and California Waterfowl Association believe that SCA 12 would unjustly tax sportsmen and sport shooters who obey gun regulations and promote safe handling of firearms. Making sportsmen pay for problems caused by urban criminals is intolerable.

Indiana and New York tried to pass similar legislation in the past. These states wanted to place additional taxes on guns and/or ammunition, and Indiana intended to use a portion of the tax to provide for violent crime victims.
