Fox dens around here are in different spots but I think the type youare talking about look like a rabbit burrow in the side of a hill or in a paddock, maybe slightly larger and usually only 1 or 2 holes.
The foxes and wild dogs here often use rabbit holes as dens when they are having pups, they only slightly enlarge them to get in there but the holes are smaller than you would expect.
If they are being used you can usually pick up a track at the entrance to tell what the animal is using it, the wild dogs/dingoes once the pups get a bit older it tends to get messy around the outside, bits of bone, scats, tracks from them playing chasey with each other. Dad tends to cache meat or bones nearby buried.
Have also seen them in hollow trees (upright still growing) under haystacks, under houses and in the roof of an abandoned farm house. Think small warm and dark

The rare blue 'native' Mastiff x, seldom seen in bushland settings, able to shrink to a minute size and enjoys making in home in small holes, kinda like a cork in a bottle. Has been known to have 'close relations' with fox although somewhat in the Black Widow spider category.

I d like to see him fit his fat *** into a hole that size, you get a shock expecting a fox and seeing him come out
