Don't give up. This "What is it?" is about four inches across and about an inch and a half tall. A two piece unit.

Not a pot warmer. Did you all know that Hitler, supposedly, helped to design the Volkswagen? Not many years later, he couldn't get out of Berlin.

Suppose I need to tell what it is. Herbie was the Love Bug, a beetle. Mired in the sand means he was trapped. Hence: a beetle trap. Bait was placed in the center and as the beetles tried to cross the hinged wings, they dropped into the container.
