I set a few new beaver sets today and I have a few questions. First I am trapping these on a river and I have not done this before in this situation. The only beavers I have trapped are in ponds and caught through the ice and in the routes between food piles and huts. I found the feed pile for this beaver in a bend in deep water so I assume his den must be close. A few of the slides are near 3 ft verticle on the bank so is this only a down slide or will a beaver really climb that tall steep bank? Will his den be real close to this feed pile like the pond beavers are? I new I shoulda taken pics of this. I will take some in the morning when I check it.

What you found is very common around here. I've seen them go up nearly verticle banks 12-15 ft high......they really do go UP them as well as down. Bends are often the deepest parts of creeks and rivers which is why they choose them often. You will find that the beavers are indeed close by in a bank den most likely. Most likely too deep to set and I always just trap that area instead of right at the den, which is quite possibly difficult to locate anyway. They are there , now just play the wind with some scent sets.

Are your beavers prime already?

I have not caught any yet this year. I need some for the upcoming cat and fisher season for bait. I usually wait until ice up to trap them but I heard from a few others that they are close to prime.

Yeah its hard to beat them for bait. I like it and bobcat meat very well, it seems to make good chunk bait. Good luck on getting you some.

Thanks. I know why everything likes it. I think it is better than steak.

carve a hole about a foot deep back into the bank. Put some bait sticks and castor in the back and a #330 in the front. About 6" of water through the trap. Make sure they cannot go around the trap to get the bait.
