Anyways heres a picture of me and the golden eye i shot a week ago.
I look pretty goofy but im sure you guys know some late season waterfowlers , they're all nuts

nice bird dude. i hit a drake like that and my buddy dusted the hen that was with him. to bad mine dove never to be seen again. got the hen though. hes got 2 so far this year. i got a drake and a hen buffy up on Lake Erie earlier in the week. im havin them mounted. Ski was there to watch me drop my first duck since then its what i eat, sleep and dream about. right next to trappin of coarse

R- I know you've had this pix up for a while but that's a nice duck!! A greater scaup, right?? We don't have them here. Only lessers (blue bills) and they almost never have their nice winter colors on for us. I hope you got a lot more ducks this year. That was my favorite hunting when I was your age. Sadly, out migration patterns have changed around here and to get any late season big migration hunting anymore I need to travel about 3 hours to the northern part of South Dakota. Down in the southeast part of the state, the migration blows past us in about 2-3 days when a big cold/storm system comes through. Maybe next year....

i do believe thats a drake goldeneye. green head on it. the hen has a brown head. a greater scaup is black. i think. aint shot one yet.

Yeah, my bad!! He even said it was a Goldeneye in his post. Another quaker I've never shot (or even seen, I think, around here). BigMoo, you have gadwells and shovelers over there in PA land?? There some of our main ducks after mallards and teal around here. NOt that I want to claim shovelers as one of our main ducks...

i have heard of people seeing or gettin them but i never have. i think there a rareity but i really dont ahve much knowledge of them. and why wouldnt you wanna claim that they are a main duck? ducks a duck and if it flys it dies

early in the year we shot alot of woodys, teal and the occasional mallard. the mid season was more gaddys, mallards, teal, and we heard and seen but never got a shot at some weigon. late season was blacks, mallards, and divers. and geese during goose season. there are 2-4 of us that hunt together at any one time so its a good time either way no matter what flys and hopefully dies lol im still playin with chokes and loads for my 835 Mossberg. i got a bad habit of makin body shots instead of head shots and they get away. i went from a mod choke to a full choke and it helped alot. the cheap Win. Expert in #2s is what i shoot during the combined goose and duck but when duck is in and not goose i switch to #4s. i like the bb count and it gives me a better chance to make up for my poor shooting our september goose season i shoot BB, BBB and #2s depending on the box i happen to grab.

BigMoo- a shovler is considered a "trash" duck around here, sort of the bottom feeding "carp" of the duck world. They also have a tendency to have cysts in their breast meat. Don't know if its from their bottom feeding habits or what but its a turn off cleaning them. I would say most shovlers shot in SD never make it to the table. They would probably be good trap bait for various critters though.

My favorite steel duck load used to be #3 or #2, once and quarter 2 3/4 inch mags. A good compromise between shot size and the number of pellets in a load. I've never been much of a 3 inch mag fan and my two scatterguns won't take 3 1/2 inch mags. I used to shoot a lot of lead 3 inch mags and I usually just got beat up more with not that much more success. Now I don't even think a guy can buy once and quarter steel in 2 3/4 inch shells. They've lightened the load a bit but increased the velocity.

Next year maybe I'll get out more duck hunting. Like I was telling the kid, we used to have a lot of around the opening of the season and then could count on the migration in mid Nov. for a lot more. Now the ducks hang up in ND or northern SD and then blow past us in a day or so when a big storm comes thorugh (they're raising too much corn way north of us and the ducks stay in those stubble fields). I'll probably have to bite the bullet and drive 3 hours north and spend a good weekend up in northern SD but even when its good up there in Nov. trapping and deer hunting season is going on. A guy needs to make November slow down and double up the days in that month!!!

we double up in the early september goose season to start. goose the morning and push brown corn fields for dove in the afternoons and evening. them some tasty little morsels too. then when the rest of small game comes in sometimes ill hunt ducks in the morning then look for squirrels and if they stocked pheasants ill go find some of them. this year they stocked the fields we were goose huntin in and as soon as the geese quit flyin we grabbed the orange and just stood still. they would run out in the field crossing the green strip from corn to corn and we just jump out and bust em. i take deer season off to fill the freezer but after i drop on its back to ducks. my best day duck huntin as far as seeing ducks and them decoying in like a dream happened during deer season. full snow camo over your waders bustin 2 inches of ice out into the swamp then hunched down in the marsh grass watching mallards and blackys come in flocks of 20-50 land in front of us at 10 foot with 2 drake mallard decoys. no calling just sittin and waitin for the next flock to come in. the only problem was we had to wait for the perfect shot cause if we didnt we wouldnt be able to wade the canals to get them. we only got 3 that day but we dropped 7. they either were winged and swam away or the 25mph wind would carry them back into the canal never to be seen again. poor planning on our part as far as the location. i wish i could have got them but whats done is done. there were so many coming in that were were picking and choosing just greenheads.

yeah those days when the ducks just keep coming in no matter what and a guy can pick just the best shots to take, those are indeed special days. I was deer hunting a number of years ago in north-central SD the Sat. after Thanksgiving and it was raining and blowing (usually its just snowing my then). A lot of times we walk the edges of marshes and kick deer out of the reeds. Anyway, we were working this slough and thousands of mallards were on it. They'd get up by the hundreds, so many jumping at once that you would just see a white haze of erupting water under them. Then they would come filtering back in smaller bunches to land again. I'm sure a guy could have sat there in the reeds a couple of hours and taken home a limit of greenheads, nothing else. Should have been duck hunting that day. Had to wait until the next day to get any deer. Stay safe on the ice

was supposed to hunt geese this morning but i guess my buddies forgot to set there alarm. i just got a call from them sayin they just woke up. i dont have that problem since i worked all night im still up. thats whats nice about working the night turn is you got all morning to hunt, in bed by 11 and sleep till 6, then back into work 7p-7a
