I got a call tonight for a porcupine. Was trying to figure how much to charge. I was thinking 50 setup and 50 per animal. Maybe a 25 trip or disposal/relocation fee.

Sound about right? Any input good or bad would be appreciated.

hey nelson how big of job dont rule out time and labor on big jobs you can some time get shot in the foot going on a head fee small jobs a head fee is good i would bring your set up fee up though depending on your market set u fees around here range from 100 to 250 depending on kind of animal remember time gas mileage and bait plus profit you want your profit atleast in the 50 percentile goodluck

Thanks for the input. I got into ADC to help people but you are right, I can't do very much of it unless it's profitable for me. Otherwize, it will just be another expensive hobby. I will probably go up on the setup then offer an hourly rate instead of per head charge and let the client choose. Either would work for me, I ain't looking to get rich but a little profit would help support some of my hobbies.

just keep a close eye on your out put and you will be fine and dont for get to keep a log or diary mileage bait excetra you can look back on it and it will help you adjust pricing i started mine part time just like you but as your name gts out there you wont just get calls from ma and pa kettle you will start getting call from the county ,city ,foresters etc.if you keep records of every thing in the form of a daily diary after you do a few jobs you you start getting an i dea of what certian jobs are costing you on output.and you can adjust accordingly good luck

Nelson I know almost NOTHING about porcupines, but the only one I ever caught and it was in west Texas was in a flat set using dried beaver castor! That's all....I haven't a clue about making charges for doing damage control.

Can you make use of or profit from an ADC animal there? Lat I heard quills and especially guard hairs were worth a pretty decent amount. That is if you are willing to take them out.

I have seen some very nice native jewelry made with porcupine quill sections. I have taken them out and cut them up in the past but I am not very good at making things like that. I do use the meat for bait or to feet the bald eagles in the winter. Other than that, they are just pests.

I went to the site today and did some scouting. Found a den in a rock outcrop that was currently empty. Found several hemlock trees that it has been using but it wasn't in them today. I set another live trap near the den in the rocks and baited it with lettuce and carrots. I'll give it a look see tomorrow and see if I had any customers.

Good luck on the Porky sets. If you ever find you have an abundance of quills (not counting any that might be sticking in you), just give me a PM and let's see what we can work out. Doc may work with you on a skull or two, I have no idea what all he has in his inventory. I think he has everything but an African Elephant!

Is there a good way of taking the quills out? last time I tried I used heavy leather gloves and kept having to pull the quills out of the gloves.

Back in the old days the natives used to throw hudsinbay blackets on the porky pines, then as the porky was wadlin away it would hang up on somthin or they could step on the end of the blanket and all the quills you could want would would be stuck in the blanket. Then just push all the quils threw the blanket to get them out.

Staple some cardboard to a board. Tap the cardboard against the quils. They will stick into the cardboard. Holding the quilled board over a container, use scissors to cut the quills off flush with the cardboard then repeat. The barbs have to come off anyway to work with the quills. What is used in crafts is the bi-colored tube of the quill. :)
