I heard some scuttlebutt that NY was considering banning the use of bodygrip traps in the state? Anyone else heard anything about this? Any info?

Check that. There ARE some changes to the use of bodygrips. And I need a good bit more info before I understand the rules. The way it sounds, you won't be able to use bait with bodygrips after a certain point, but there are ALL kinds of questions to go along with that.....

Yeah, not a whole lot different there. But look at this...
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30507.html
So, does that mean that nothing on land can be baited as far as bodygrippers go after Dec. 10? I mean, I understand what they're thinking, decreas unitended bobcats, fisher, etc. But, what about baiting in weasel boxes? Does this include things like bucket sets, or just exposed sets on land? Like I said, LOTS of questions and clarification is going to be needed on that one.....

I definately would track down the local Wildlife Officer and bend his ear. If you make a mistake because you do not understand the new regs, it could and most likely would cost you a bundle. Good Luck

Yeah. I'm out of town right now, so it'll have to wait. I've already gotten one ticket because I misunderstood something. Not going to let that happen again.

read the new hunting and trapping regs book.
its pretty detailed, the way I understand it is you can use 220 conis on land unbaited, unless you are using in buckets
and cubbies then they can be baited but there is specific setback requirements, I know there is max size openings for entrances.
As well if it is a min of 4ft off the ground it can be baited. you can also mount wooden box type cubbies to trees with opening on bottom but there again there is max height levels. 110 conis can be baited with little or no regs.
all this info is available in the ny hunting book you get when you buy your license, last page of trapping regs.
hope this helps
later

NY... all you said is true, but after the 10th of Dec., you can't bait any body grip set on land, bucket or not.

Northern Zone only... trying to stop fishers from getting caught after their season is over.

I'd get used to sets without conis, its a matter of time more dogs get killed in them on roadside sets, legal or not those sets are out there still, or some kid gets whacked with a 220 crawling into a bucket and you're all done.

you look at an article I just read from a guy in Mass who cage traps a 21 day season for fisher and he sets 80 cages in that gawd awful crowded state and he averages over 60 fisher a season . that's some darn good trapping since they went to cages only.

i trapped it a few years ago but with non resident license fees and gas costs I broke even for the season, plus put 1500miles of wear on my truck that it didnt need.

Colorado, Arizona, Mass, ....cages are coming to NY on public land, matter of time.

I"ll agree with you to a extent..I can see them outlawing on land only. Not sure they will ever be totally illegal.
This state is a bit screwed up anyways, so you never know. Did you see on the flip side that they just legalized
crossbows for general public starting next year......Stipulation is they cannot be used during 1sr archery season
they can be used from opening of shotgun right through the late bow muzzleloader season..finally something given instead of taken.
