Anti's Make Another Run at Nixing Maine Bear Hunt- (3/30/2007)
Maine

Maine sportsmen are being called to prevent lawmakers from axing bear hunting. The state’s hunters have defeated previous anti-bear hunting efforts, and must redouble efforts.

House Bill 1144, sponsored by Rep. James Schatz, D-Blue Hill, will outlaw bear trapping. Voters rejected such a ban in 2004, and lawmakers upheld the voters’ decision in 2005 when they defeated a similar bill in committee. The current legislation awaits action in the Joint Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

“The grassroots efforts of Maine sportsmen have been key to legislative and ballot issue successes in the state,” said USSA President Bud Pidgeon. “This bill is the next attack in a firestorm against bear hunters, making immediate grassroots action vital to the future of the hunt.”

Take Action! Don’t give up your hunting rights; Maine sportsmen should call their state representatives and put a stop to House Bill 1144. To contact your representative, call (207) 287-1400 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.

The problem is that the state gave away our two trap limit and ability to use the foothold trap on bears. Nobody won a battle, they just gave it away to try to appease the antis, dont they know that this does not work. Why would they help them I dont know. :?

I'd rather set a cable snare meant for the foot than a traditional foothold anyway.

Our current commissioner is weak on trapping regardless of the issue (bear trapping, coyote snares, etc.), but at least the compromise did not take any our right to harvest bears by trapping.

I disagree, while i didnt trap with a leghold either they did in fact give away some of our rights. And what did this accomplish??? will they stop the attack now, of course not, they will keep trying to outlaw it all and we just gave them a small part for nuthing. In my opionion lets give them nothing and be proud of who we are. Just me I guess.

I can agree we lost something, but Maine is still the only state left that we can trap bears. We didn't lose that like they wanted.

Even if they won and trapping was outlawed entirely, they would still never stop. Hunting would be next, then fishing, then motorized access.

The Roxanne Quimby-types across Maine will never stop.
