Post subject:  Which gun?

hey guys, I'm new to the site. I am wondering what gun do you think i should use for coyotes and foxes. i am going to be selling the pelts so i would like to have limited fur damage. i have taken 2 coyotes in the year of 06. a female around 35 pounds with my 45 cal muzzleloader at 10 steps and and 45 pound male with my 6mm using 95 grain ballistic tips at around 160 yards. they were both taken while not even hunting for coyotes.Me and pa trapper will be furbearer hunting together this fall and winter. i am thinking on getting either a 22-250, 220 swift, or a 204 ruger. i have a 222 but it is an old, old savage that doesnt shoot all that well. your opinions will be much appreciated.
thanks,
Ray

I voted for the electronic call but I always carry a few mouth calls with me. I never seem to get my howls quite right from a mouth call.

If you are going to sell the fur do not use anything bigger than a .204. I prefer a .17. Centerfire is better if you are shooting over 100 yards. Rimfire is OK for less. If you choose to go for more power, it doesn't make any sense to use a 22-250, because you will pay five times more for ammo. The .223 is just as good and the ammo is dirt cheap. The latter calibers will tear up the fur though.

It is really what ever you want. I personally use a .222 for actual predator hunting, but I also use a .22 Magnum and both do the job very well.

I do not have the large open area as most so I most often do not make shots over 100 yards so either caliber will do the job. But if I am going to an area that the possibility is there that a 150 yard or more shot may be needed I take the .222 and get after them.

The most important part of your rifle will be your optics, you should put a good scope on your weapon of choice... If you can not see your objective clearly you will be more likely to miss or make a bad hit and loose the fur, and shoot the weapon all the time or at least once a week at targets the more you shoot the more intouch with the weapon you become and you will always know where the round is going to hit...

If you have a .222 already I would stick with it, put a good scope on the weapon and go tear them up brother.... But if you are dead set on purchasing a new rifle... Go with the .223 as the ammo is much cheaper and everyone carries it on the shelves.

I have been using a .17 Rem for about 10 years now and it is an awsome caliber. Great knock down power with minimum fur damage. If I was buying again it would be another 17 or a look at the .204

I am a big fan of combo guns. I have a 222 over 20 and love, best of both worlds.

hey ch91, ive been calling dogs for over 10 years and spent alot of money on gimmicks. I highly reccomend a 223 or 243 with optics that are twice the price of the rifle. concentrate on doing the basics properly and spend plenty of time on the range in the off season and you will do well!!!!

What rifle did you buy? .223, .22 Hornet, .22 rimfire(LR), .22 magnum are standby's for fur hunting. .32-20 was popular years ago.
