I live in Ohio and have read the regulations and I am still unsure. Can you only use a 5x5 inch trap on land and anything bigger than that has to be completly submerged in water. Is that right? Just trying to figure out if I can use a conibear for coon. Thanks in advance

If you don't get a reply, post the portion of the regs here & maybe we can help decipher them......

Here's a link to the Ohio regulations. The trapping portion starts on Page 26. Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations

Here's a quote from the booklet-- "Foothold traps set on land shall not have an inside diameter jaw spread greater than 5 5/8 inches. Body gripping traps set on land, or in a tile, den, or burrow on land shall not have an inside diameter jaw spread greater than 5 inches in diameter. Body gripping traps with an inside diameter jaw spread greater than 7 inches in diameter must be completely submerged in water."

So it sounds like you are correct on the 5 X 5 size. But to be absolutely sure I would give your local warden a call.

I was at a trapping seminar this past fall hosted by the OSTA and the Wildlife Officer that was there said that a 5"x5" is max for a conibear set on dry land.

Supposedly, someone is trying to get it changed to let us use 220 size conibears on land. So check it each year to see.
