in the past i have used wire stretchers and am switching to boards what are the belly wedges used for and are they needed

Yes they are needed. You slip them between the pelt and the board so when you are ready to remove the dried hide you can remove the wedge like board and the hide will come off easier. If you dont use one you will have one h___ of a time getting your pelt off and wont forget the next time.

The wedges will be needed. Like SingleFeather stated...it won't be something you'll forget the next go around! Once dry and fitted to the board without a wedge, it will have to be dampened and "worked off" the board. The wedges also give you some control on getting a good stretch on your hides.
