hey yall, im new and i have enjoyed some previus posts. I am trapping on my angus farm, and we have three ponds, all connected by swamps in the middle, pretty neat setup for rats. We have caught about 30 or so....and the ponds are about an acre each and ditto with the three swamps connecting them. How many rats do you think this place might hold, because our catch has gone down dramatically. Thanks and keep up the good work!

i would probably stop rat trapping there now. even though im sure there are a lot more rats you should save some for next year. pull out the coon traps, set for coons and mink in the swamps for awhile

that's kinda what i thought but my father said nah there's lots more.....I put some buycket sets out for coon and have ohnly caught a feral cat so far. I thiink it probably has to do with thew fact that we had a high of 26 today, and it was windy as heck. thanks for the reply...........I read somewhere that good habitat would support about 8 rats an acre. sounds about rght to me i guess....maybe a little on the low side

is there a general rule for the number of rats to take per house to ensure a good number next season?

I don't know of one but wuld guess about 6..........Still no lck on coons or fox but i got 6 more rats....we have a warm spell starting tomorrow that should last a week. Better get some coon moving, i am doing eveyrthing how it should be done so i hope it pays off!
Also, i had a 220 that kept going off on me, It was the only one i had left and of course needed it. I scorred the jaw and the dog with my pocket knife..just enough to take the dye off, and it held. Not sure if it is too rigid of a triger yet, but at least it stayed set. ill let ya know what the morning brings.

Bernie Berringer in his Farmland Trapping book has the table of figures for muskrat reproduction in farm ponds and safe harvest measures.
