Last week set up some houses to see how the fur was. Picked up 4 over night. The fur on the beaver was looking good.

Image
next day after they had dried, brushed them out to see how the underfur was coming. Excellent.

So Friday I headed out to my sons line to get camp ready for a big push on beaver Saturday
when the boys showed up. From 6 am till 5 pm Saturday was lots of boat work hitting the many
lakes as well as running the roads and side trails. Was disappointing to find so few beaver houses
compared to what the line has as a rule. Lots of wolf tracks hanging around the beaver ponds.
Saturday everyone so tired that no one had the ambition to start the sauna. 9 pm the cabin was
still and quite zzz zzz.

16 beaver over night and one rat.

Monday evening was a skin day.

Now will head out again soon on my line to take some more. Rain and snow forcast for next couple
of days with lows around 0.

That appears to be a very good start. Lots of work but that's what you go out there to do.

Are those beaver prime yet? With all the buyers stressing that they only want prime fur in this down market, I can't imagine you would be after early skins given your level of expertise. I understand you have quotas as well and that's sure to persuade you to start when you have to. Just curious as to your thought process....thanks?

Yes WSC they are ready to go. Location has a big factor when you can trap and like myself prime fur is a must considering today's market. So with our climate here we can start trapping good fur before you can. Just put in 12 beaver sets today and with -5 over night can see ice happening. I always put out a few sets to see how the beaver are progressing fur wise then start or wait. This year is earlier then last. And with weather patterns back to normal this winter will be blasted with Arctic conditions Starting in the New Year. The way the jet stream flows will affect Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario and MN. We will see lots of -40 this winter.

Nice action wolf and company!!! Lots of hard work but I'm sure its second nature by now. Do the gov officials ever adjust your quotas or do they stay about the same every year? I'm sure the local road crews will thank you for clearing out some of those chisel tooths...!!

Yes it is second nature. The MNR does not change our Quota unless we ask, but have to prove it. The line i acquired couple years back had a quota of 100 beaver. Unfortunately the beaver were not there to meet the said numbers to be harvested. Dryden trappers council allocated the funds to fly the line and came up with 30 live beaver houses. There could have been a few more. The MNR in Ontario says 1 1/2 beaver per house so now my quota is 45 . There is no thanks from the logging companies as most logging roads have been idle for many years { side roads } the main roads we keep clean of beaver 12 months of the year with our nuisance beaver program .

No, been a struggle this year. Still have a hard time to get motivated to tell you the truth. I skinned 4 beaver this afternoon and fleshed them but run out of steam to board. My son just bought his first home and 160 acres. Been busy out there. This week will make another push on beaver to finish my quota as Saturday back out at Dave and Bobbies place to replace weeping tile. My brain is saying go and my body is say what the h*&%l. We are at 37 beaver so far and one Kansas beaver {rat} Had to give you a dig Amak, been awhile buddy.

Picked up 3 more today out of 9 traps. 4 were iced in. Did catch a 70 pounder though and a 52 pounder.

Sunday will do one run setting on Wawapus with 16 foot as the big water still is not freezing and hope to finish off the beaver.
