I rebedded all my yote traps in fresh peat moss on saturday but it snowed soon after and the flake antifreeze melted all the snow on top of the trap bed and now it's just bare moist peat moss with 3 inches of fresh snow all around it. Will that little spot of bare ground be alright or will it make the yotes suspicious and cause them to step around it? Thanks guys.

If I have three or four inches of snow, I use a broom to clear an area where I'll make a set. If need be, a shovel is used to clear the area. Just make a big mess around the set. Makes a heck of an attraction. Just clear the area in front of the set and you should be fine.

Well I got my answer from Mr coyote himself. Had one come through and work 3 urine post sets in a row. Each time he skirted around the bare dirt, marked the log and headed for the next set. I ordered some waxed dirt and I'm going to reset all my traps this weekend. I haven't had this much coyote activity in quite a while and until my waxed dirt arrives I have zero confidence in any my sets. Freeze/thaw is aggravating.

I put a couple hay sets out last year and for some reason the yotes wanted nothing to do with them. The coyotes in my neighborhood are wierd.

Ive never had a problem with peat moss covering and coyotes. ...but I think a lot will have to do with the type of set you make. I suspicion the coyote will do the same thing to you no matter the covering type. I would definitely clear the area of snow around the trap. I learned some time ago, to make my sets of a walk through design. I dont depend on the animal "working" my scent set. Instead, I put them in areas where the animal will travel naturally and go through my set in travel alone... and put a scent set right along the edge of the travel, so the animal doesnt have to go out of the way to stop and sniff. The trap pan lays right in the animals path. I also learned to imploy a bare pan technique, that gives the animal a nice clean flat place to step, and insures a good line up and hit, for when he does slow to sniff the scents. I do use subtle guiding materials, to "suggest", not force, the animal to step right "here". Later winter, I try to focus on the heaviest ground cover areas, and trap the lines of travel leading to and away from the big cover. That may be a tree row, a tall grass edge, what ever topography that will funnel animals to the big cover in a narrow band. You approach it that way, you wont have any troubles catching coyotes, provided you have them in that area.
