While checking my snares, I think I had a coyote barking at me close by. When I approached it took off, and halfway up the ridge it barked again. When walking back to the car they started howling and screaming up on the ridge. It's almost like they know I'm there. So have I been busted? The only way to check my snares is to walk the trails in rubber boots due to the brush and it being dark. Is it worth trying at this point?

Not a problem. They are NOT a creature that thinks and reasons things out. They just react to their environment and use their instincts to avoid trouble. The one thing you don't want to do is walk a trail up to a snare and then turn around and retrace your steps. You won't fool a coyote into not knowing you have been there, but if you stop and turn around, they get nervous. Being the paranoid critters they are, that just makes them more so. Walk past your snares and then circle around back to your starting point. If most of the world was out to get you, you'd be paranoid too.

BINGO.....X2....

I've been howled and barked at a number of times. Some would even follow along my travel, paralleling me raising cane none stop just out of my lights range. Gets on my dang nerves when they do that crap. There is no doubt they do it at us. I think normally its dominant animals announcing their displeasure of our prescence. Though annoying, I've never seen any difference on my line as a result. In fact, most times i will end up with the loudmouths in a trap, to holler at me one last time. Like rem said, they just dont reason the way we humans tend to try and portrait that they do. My advice is keep trapping. You will get those loud ones eventually if not sooner.
