In the past couple weeks I have been so blessed to catch my first beaver and my first coyote. Tonight the blessings continued. I was running my small water line tonight and the last trap was an otter set I put out 2 weeks ago. You guessed it. I had a big old male otter in a 220 trail set. Almost 50 inches long. #402 here in Indiana. I'm speechless. My taxidermist is the happiest guy in the world. I've racked up almost a thousand dollar bill so far this year and it ain't going down any by the looks of it.

good job jermbon. !!! I remember spending thousands of dollars on taxidermy bills back in the day. Enjoyed the L out of those mounts until they started gathering dust and getting in my way as I got older. Ended up giving most of them away or selling them for a fraction of what they cost me to have them mounted. I should have spent that money on land instead of making someone else rich .

jerm...Congrats on the slider!!! Maybe someday before I die I'll catch one of those handfuls. We now have some in SD and there are incidental catches but I've heard very little about the status of otters in the state (is the population still growing and expanding or have things leveled off). I don't know if the state trapping association even hears much from SD GFP about sliders. Maybe I should ask...

I tried to find a legitimate news article from a major source talking about both the expansion of otters to various states (supposedly they were very widespread during Euro-American settlement) as well as the expansion of bobcats (such as in IL and IN). You would think such conservation/restoration stories would be fashionable for a national news organization. I guess not. I only found state specific or advocacy groups talking about things. I did find this one about the expansion of otters in IN in a rather short time but even this story is dated (I tried checking when this was released but I found no date given) as they still talk about a closed trapping season for sliders. I wish our otter population would grow as fast but I guess we don't have the right habitat and or efforts from our game department is lacking (or both). Now if otters were major pheasant killers or nest robbers, then there would be efforts made...

Otters and bobcats are my two favorite target animals. I am always extra pleased when I get either. Seems you caught a mighty good sized one to start off with. Congratulations.

Have you a photobucket or other service?

I have a photo bucket but I don't really know how to use it. I just use it as a backup. What are the steps?

I just wanted to give a shout out to Mohawk for sending me some fox snares last year. I had a nice bushy red fox bouncing around this morning which make 2 fox with his snares. Thanks a lot man. Snaring has become one of my favorite methods of trapping.

Now I know how to snare a fox, I'll just have you catch em for me. It's good to know that them snares will do the job. Congrats on the great season and I hope your success continues on.
