Just wondering since NAFA opened up the private party treaty office a few weeks back, if anyone has sold some hides? It looks like I sold a coon for $13 during the past few days. I hope they clean out a few more

Good job on the PT sale PC. My cupboard is currently bare but it will be interesting what this season brings.

Nope, still got 4 coon, 4 weasels and 9 squirrels there. Probably have double that sitting there next fall, but man those are my favorites critters to catch (along with muskrats) I'm still probably gonna hit them hard again this fall, just for the experience, not the money.

....im expecting a NAFA letter any day now stating that a number of my coon pelts have wasted away. Lol! Fox and beaver will rot next....

I remember not so long ago, gray fox sat unmoved for 3 or 4 seasons straight before any movement happened at all. Guys were belly aching around saying it would never end. I think this coon market will make that incident look like childs play.

Amak- It's interesting how similar the wild fur market and scrap metal, especailly steel, are tracking. Probably one reason is because China is such a player in both. Both had wild 2013s (I wasn't into scrap much then but I've heard people talk). "Shred" steel (light, less than a 1/4 inch thick) was in the $160-200 a ton range (8-10 cents a pound) in some locations (don't think it ever got that high here). Now shred in many places is down to a penny or two a pound (I found that penny a pound number this week, 167 pounds of light steel out of my trunk and back seat yielded me $1.67). A few places are no longer paying for such steel but people can drop it off if they want it out of their hair.

So, in the coon market it went from some guys getting $40+ averages for big western northerns in Feb. 2013 to no one wanting them unless to break the market and reset things to a new much lower base price. You have one major set of coon buyers (the Russians) who weren't even much at the 2015 auctions and the other, the Chinese, who are hedging their bets that if they don't buy now (and their economy is on the skids now as well), sooner or later NAFA and FHA will cave and they will be happy to buy very cheap.

I guess the moral of the story is if you're into a commodity that only has a few major buyers, it can go sideways pretty fast when conditions change. Meanwhile, the altered ecosystem(s) is (are) pumping out lots and lots of coon. I guess the car alignment guys will stay busy. They probably like lots of coon on the roads...

I got my check today for less than $12 for the coon I sold pp earlier in the fall. They must be closing the books for 2015.

According to the on-line pick-up schedule for South Dakota, we'll have 2 this season, one less than a week before the end of Jan. auction and another one in early April. I'll have to check with our agent to see if this is correct or not but if so that means NAFA's going into the first auction with no new wild fur from my state. Maybe there will be some new stuff from Canada or AK but they must be counting on the first auction just primarily being a ranch mink fest. Maybe its a way to test the waters with what's left over of wild fur and then see how the April auction shapes up. Don't know.

Like I said, I can roll up a larger green coon hide and freeze them for a couple years if needed to await a rebound. Kind of like #2 copper in a 5 gallon bucket. Roll the dice and see what happens down the road...

.........wish we could do that here,we must have all fur gone 20 days after the last day of close of the season,no hold overs...

Bunch of IL commies!! :(

SD law is green fur must be checked within 10 days of the close of the season to be kept. But coon and many other critters now have no season so that reg is mute. The only things that have a season are water critters and the limited bcats. We have no otter season.

PA is the same way on green fur. All green fur, no matter what species, cannot be in a persons possession 10 days after the season has ended. Any hides you hold onto after that must be stretched and dried.

Yep, there seems to be a pattern. The more populated a state with a very powerful and entrenched state government, the more regulations it has on its citizens. When it comes to trapping regs, SD is basically a cake walk...

Here, you can't have any hides, green or dried, 15 days after the season, unless you get a permit. The permit is no problem, just a pain to get into town before the office closes.
