Well got my first non domestic day after Christmas! Pepe was waitin for me at the first trap on my line. Can anyone tell me the best way to handle skinnin and deaden the scent on the hide? I'll be keepin her as a memento of my first catch after almost 30 years off a line. Thanx. God bless.

Remove the essence from the sacs with a syringe if you have one, if not carefully remove the scent glands and then skin normally. Once skinned and if the hide needs to have scent removal, use the following recipe:

1qt hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup baking soda
1 tsp Dawn liquid

mix-soak hide for 10 mins then rinse in clear water
repeat if not odor free the first time

this mix has no shelf life, so dispose of it when finished.

Swamp is right on with his technique. I may add that if you do not want to harvest the essense, make a very large cut around the anus. About 1 1/2 inches should suffice outside the normal cut. Carefully skin in the area and when you pull on the tail be gentle. That's how I do it and the essense stays put for me. Hope this helps.

You can also rinse the hide out with gas. They come out very clean. But you want to keep it as far away from your trapping stuff as you can afterwards.

If you want to salvage the essence to sell or for your own use you can get syringes at almost any farm n home type store. I use insulin ones because i have plenty but sometimes its hard to draw. If a guy got some of the syringes for livestock shots hed probably be better off. If you need the procedure or technique most of us on here have done it once or twice. It should have good vĂ lue this year. Usually runs $15-$20/oz as an average i think?

If you want to reuse the syringe make sure to rinse it out really well with water afterwards. Essence eats metal and plastic. Glass is about the only thing it can be stored in.

Good evening all, I am new to the forum . I'm a trapper in far southeast texas (orange,tx) Just wanted to comment on our little black and white friend. I just skinned one this evening and the solution works but I would add wash the animal in the solution before skinning. Much more pleasant to skin.

I wash mine before skinning also.

I had no idea that a skunk would skin that easy. Not much to flesh but the membrane, correct?

Depends I guess, ours have quite a layer of fat on them, especially this late in the year

The one I skinned yesterday had almost no fat. Our temps have been mild lately.

Be careful or you will burn up more in materials than you will get out of the pelt.
