I keep catching squirrels in my coyote sets and I was wondering if they were worth anything? I love to eat them but will the hide bring anything?

jermbonoutdoors, if you are catching squirrels in yote traps, your pan tension is too light. You need to tighten them up a little. I'm not saying a 3-4 pounds, but enough to keep the squirrels from tripping them. Kelley

It's only in my duke traps. My 550's do a great job of keeping little critters out but my dukes always have some issue and pan tension is usually one. It seems like some don't hold pan tension anymore. I don't know if the screw is bad or what but I put up with it so I can have a longer trap line

Well I guess if I catch enough I can make a little extra money and add some meat to the freezer. Certainly isn't a shortage of squirrels in my neck of the woods.

Real tough to skin but once you get'em all cleaned up they make a tasty snack.

If I do sell squirrel hides do I need to leave the tail on or can I cut it off and sell it separately?

About 20 years ago they started buying squirrels from our area but ended up quitting .50-$1 was the going rate and they wanted them case skinned. I dont miss case skinning them, big pain. We do save the tails an tradem to Mepps for lures. We skin em starting at the tail end up with hide at both ends but its slick as an be. Last i knew the fur trade wanted the tails on?

Before you do it, you REALLY need to check your game laws. Most states have squirrel listed as small game and you also can't normally sell game animals or game animal parts. Make sure to check it out thoroughly as you can end up in a lot of trouble.

I think the auction houses only deal with red pine squirrels as far as bulk. There isnt much of a fur market for greys, fox , flying, or ground squirrels.

Like cat man said, selling game animal parts or meat will land you a healthy fine here in our State, and the only thing you can sell as far as critters are furbearers....so check your State laws.

I meant selling them at a fur auction. Is there a market for them or should I just sell the tail to mepps?

Like I say, there is a fur market for Red Pine Squirrels.....the other types of squirrels dont really have a fur market. I dont know what kind you are catching. Some people call the big fox squirrels a red squirrel but that is actually incorrect to do so. Red Pine squirrels are tiny lil things. So if they are not the little pine squirrels, id go the mepps route if legal.

Alrighty thanks. We have big fox squirrels but I also see red squirrels or pineys as we call'em here. I'll probably go with mepps. Thanks for the help

Squirrels are a really easy animal to put up and skin, and they're great for practicing case skinning on. Mess it up, only 0.50 down the drain, as opposed to messing up on a bobcat or otter or something. I can take a fresh squirrel and have a fur on the board in about 5-7 minutes now. Plus they're fun and easy to trap

Would the daily hunting bag limit (5 here in Indiana) only allow me to trap 5 squirrels per day or is that only for hunting?

I would guess that would go for trapping too.

I'm only putting out 5 traps then. Can't wait to start trapping them. I'll probably wait until January so they're fully prime. 20 cents for prime tails. And all that fresh squirrel meat is gonna be such a treat.

You would have to check your State regs. Here, we cannot legally trap for anything other then furbearers and in the case of animal damage control and pest species. That includes game like squirrels and rabbits and they are illegal to trap here other then ADC work. We do get a few now and again as incidentals in our sets on accident, but we cannot do it deliberately. So every State is different.

From what I understood it is legal to intentionally trap them here in Indiana but correct me if I'm wrong.

You can go on the Indiana DNR website and it will list specifically what you can trap. We cant trap rabbits or squirrels in illinois. If theres a 5 a day limit(same as ours) id about bet you cant trap them but check for sure. One illegally taken squirrel or one over the bag limit is about $300 here. They are about the tastiest little boogers. We have grey and what the DNR calls red squirrels. Our "fox" squirrels are protected but enforcing that would be a nightmare as they look like bigger reds. Here our flying squirrels are protected but theyre so small might as well eat a mouse. Im used to still skinning them so case skinning seems weird. There was another tail buyer for awhile but i think they went out of business.also when they were buying them here they didnt want any with shot holes etc. we sold some one year for .25 that had just a few pellet holes from no.6's. At the time they were selling here the DNR had a press release that as long as they weren't harvested only for the hose and tail selling the tail and/or hide was permissible if the squirrels were taken by licensed hunters with legal hunting methods and daily bag and possession limits were observed. So legally we could only hold 10 squirrel hides at that time. Incidentally, we used sow mink boards, we tried custom metal ones we made with clothes hangers etc and even wired a few rat stretchers tighter but the boards were easier and the buyer liked'em better so we got .25 more each done up like that. They did look good after the boards.
