Well got out and set 13 of my 19 dp's yesterday afternoon and picked these 4 up this morning

user/stdugo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps67ae1db1.jpg.html]Image[/URL]

I got another 4 dp's out today and set 7 snares, set 1 on a fence right where I seen a red fox craw under when I was setting dp's yesterday. So far this season is off to a good start for me.

Nice work!! A couple of those have some good silvery flanks. I guess we'll be putting in some skinning time

Thanks guys, now I just got to keep it up lol

For bait with dp's I use cheap cat food mixed with pancake syrup and 1/2 oz of vanilla extract or ansies oil. Big marshmallow under the trigger 2 spoons of the cat food mix marshmallow on top then I rip a marshmallow in half and put them on the ground about 3-4' from the trap on the trail as well as a spoon full of the cat food mix.

Silvery flakes? Good? Bad?

Them silver guard hairs is a good thing. More silver the better. Them silver coon bring more money and the same with the possums.

Well we got some snow last night/this morning
Image

First check I had nothing, the wind was very strong there so I figured it had something to do with it.
2nd stop I picked up 5 goon and a skunk. 3rd stop nothing.

Looking good 2bird, that is a good start. Looks like you have some large coons to deal with.

Yeah, I'm at 9 on the 2nd day, last season that's all a caught was 9. I think I got 3 or so that are around 20#, need to weight them I guess. I figure I will set some footholds come Friday because I have to do afternoon check on week days.

2 main spots for the coon,

1, 1 mile of creek with a corn field on the east and a farm (grain) on the west

2, 170 acres of never trapped summer rental cabins with corn field and tons of junk piles, also along the river.

well nothing yesterday, kind of expected to not have much action with the coons as the high was 26. today the high is 34 then it suppose to warm up to the mid 40's for a while. Thinking about setting a few footholds for K-9, should i wait until it warms up a little first? Red fox prints everywhere!!! with the snow i could tell a fox came up to 5 of my dp's and ate the marshmallow off the top, thought that was weird for a fox to eat a marshmallow. nothing in the snares yet.

Why wait? Get them in the ground. The cold does not effect the k9's. The worst is gets the better they move.

I will not say it wont work, but I would sleep better at night if I had bait in the hole and lure on the top lip of my holes. I like fur of any kind in my hole or a wad of grass. Makes for good eye appeal. I personally use alpaca wool or sheeps wool in my holes. I just started using alpaca wool this year and so far it's a big hit. Now I am grabbing for the alpaca instead of the sheep. So far every thing I have caught this year has had the alpaca wool in it. The ones with the sheep wool has been untouched. Two of the yotes have been caught on scent post sets. Also I don't use urine at my dirt holes any more. I don't see where it has gained me any thing by doing so, so I save it for other sets. It's just a matter of preference though.

Also I have a young friend (20-21 yo) that has started to show a interest in trapping, he ended up buying 3 Duke dp's and I hooked him up with some of my coon bait and my basic run down, yesterday his roof his trappers education course. After work he set his 3 traps at his girlfriends house (rural 1acer lot with small creek but a few coon run through, he ran my line with me to see what I do. When we got back about a hour after dark he asked if it would be ok to check his traps so I said sure let's go for it, guess what he had his first fur!!! A nice 18-20# sow coon 3 hours after he set the trap. Needless to say he is hooked!!!

I'd take that any day of the week :--) Much better than a grinner

In that last pix of your friend and his first coon, there's someone in the background that looks like he's holding a short barreled shotgun that just has a pistol grip. I'm I correct and what's up with that??
